Grinder Pump installation

DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT A GRINDER PUMP IS?

Today we are going to show you a grinder pump installation we executed in Marbella

A lot of customers, call me for a “broken grinder pump” because the person that sold them the pump, declared:

“This pump is good for every kind of water, it grinds it all!”

Then when i see their broken pump I discover a typical waste water pump with a standard “vortex” impeller.

WHAT IS A GRINDER PUMP?

What defines a GRINDER PUMP, is a grinding device, a CUTTER device, that can cut and reduce the solid and semisolid material in the water.

A pump can be defined Grinder Pump, only if it has a grinding device in the inlet.

The most of the grinder pumps in the market, are made in cast iron.

Cast iron is a strong material that provides to the pump a very solid structure BUT:

repairing cast iron grinder pumps, I found a lot of case of oxidation.

Oxidation process, starts very soon inside the water, even if the producer claims that “our cast iron is chemically processed”…

so is very common to find a cast iron grinder pump blocked. I mean, the pump was installed a year ago, it never started,

and the cast iron impeller (chemically processed) is blocked because of oxidation.

For this reason we decided to use stainless steel grinder pumps, for our household installations.

GRINDER PUMP INSTALLATION

Look at this installation: the customer decided to build a bathroom in the cellar.

We have toilette bowl, shower and washing machine (this means hot water) in the same waste water.

Single manhole, no settling, no divisions…all the waste water goes directly in a simple, little manhole, so:

this is obviously a grinder pump situation.

Now: it’s not possible to promise to the customer, he will have not problems in the future,

but a grinder pump for sure will solve the 90% of the problems alone. Then, will be very important,

at the crucial moment of keep the pump out of the manhole, to have down there a stainless steel, light pump,

not the typical cast iron monsters, heavy and oxidated.

DETAILS

The last detail you have to consider when they offer you a real 230V grinder pump, is that this kind of pumps

are constantly working with waste water and solid and semisolid particles that partially block the grinding device.

For this reason, a real grinder pump needs an extra help for restart and keep grinding: a start/restart capacitor

that helps the standard run capacitor during the starting phase, when a high torque is required, and disconnect

itself automatically after a few seconds.

in this last photo you see the simple pump control box, with the two capacitors.

So, before to buy a real grinder pump, ask to a professional: Head Pumps.
