Pressure tank air recharge
Today I want to explain how important is the air recharge of your pressure tank. We are talking about what we generally call the “regular maintenance” of your replaceable membrane air expansion tank…yes, the red balloon you see close to the water booster set. That one eheh.

Here we have an Ibaiondo 200lt replaceable membrane expansion vessel. Very common in Spain https://www.ibaiondo.com/producto/amr/
In Head Pumps we are professionals in installation and maintenance of pressure tanks too. We offer to our customers three maintenance options (with three different prices):
Option 1: every six months. The perfect solution, the one that the producer recommends.
Option 2: once per year. Many customers choose this option
Option 3: every three months. The only option you have if you don’t want to replace the old damaged pressure tank.
Here you have another article about pressure tanks maintenance: https://headpumps.com/pozos-con-problemas-especiales/
In the market you can find pressure tanks that no need any maintenance for years, but the price is pretty much higher than the standard ones, so the customer eventually buy the old fashioned replaceable membrane expansion vessel.

As a professional of pumps and control devices I’ve got absolutely nothing against this kind of products. A regular maintenance helps me to avoid and solve many kind of problems related to your beloved booster sets.
The biannual maintenance is the best solution, also the solution that the producer recommends BUT, some customers prefer to see the problem appears, before to pay for the maintenance. This can reveal a fatal error because the problem can appear when NOBODY can solve it.

What happens when a water pressure tank runs out of air?
This: https://youtube.com/shorts/55_wi0uPY94?si=dKXWeRr44sg_tg9L Many people think that if you replace your old mechanical pressure switch with a modern presscontrol you don’t need a pressure tank. No sir. not true, like you can see in this video.
Or this: https://youtu.be/EXRhuA32bec?si=Zv46wCvq_sOWyFdq Many people think that it’s good to use their well pump for irrigation… No sir. Very bad. In this case we recommend to install an inverter.
When a pressure tank is running out of air, the booster set starts a sudden and continuous serie of starts and stops that eventually produces damages on the mechanical pressure switch, on the mechanical parts of the pump and on the electrical motor.
