Espa Drainex 302M analysis and repair

Here you find damage analysis and repair of three  Espa Drainex 302M.

A customer lately brought me three damaged Espa Drainex 302M he claimed  that it’s a very expensive pump and needed a pump professional to repair them.

Before to bring me the pumps, the customer wanted a quotation of the repair, to understand if it worthed to repair or not. He already received various quotations and all out them were out of the customer budget, I explained him that a pump expert can’t pass a quotation without check on the damaged  pump and make an analysis…so we extablished a price to desmount, analyze and pass the quotation and started the work.

Dismounting Espa Drainex 302M

As soos as I desmounted the pump, I undestrood the problem.

The capacitor was damaged and the winding was burned, so I asked to the customer to send me a photo of the control box. From the customer’s photo I confirmed the pump didn’t have a thermal protector so I reported to the customer the problem and his answer was “the pump has an inner built thermal protector, so it doesn’t need another external thermal ptotection or a control box”. ..WRONG.

I explained to the customer that it’s very important for this pump to have a control box or a simple thermal protector, that it’s perfectly useless to repair these pumps or buy a new one… and explained how the inner built thermal protection works. The customer thought he knew a lot about pumps…obviously he never met a pump expert in his life.

So the first error was committed by the customer: no thermal protection, so impossible to claim any warranty.

Now I’d like to tell a couple of things to my Espa friends: in my opinion of pump expert and pump manufacturer, to install a inner capacitor, without a minimum separation between capacitor and winding, is a suicide.

I understand that with a simple thermal protector we can avoid the winding burning, ok, BUT the capacitor failure is a very common damage, and desinstall/desmount this pump to replace a bare capacitor is not a clever thing. Pretty much better to leave the capacitor outside the pump.

Second detail for Espa engineers:

Why do make a resin here if the motor is not oil cooled and if the maximum submergence of this pump is 7mt? I personally like the espa resin application in drainex100 model for example, but here, that’s completely nonsense.

Water test:

So I repaired the motor and passed to the water test:

The water test is good. The pump is ready to go back to the customer
